After a long workout, reaching for a drink containing electrolytes seems like the logical thing…
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Interestingly, our skin has the natural ability to exfoliate the surface of our skin.
As we get older, the skin’s efficiency to renew the cells decreases. If not removed, it can cause dry, flaky spots and clogged pores. For cells to continue to renew, using either chemical or physical exfoliators could benefit the skin.
Benefits of exfoliation
Exfoliation, if done consistently and regularly can improve the texture and appearance of the skin by;
- Brightening the complexion
- Improving the absorption of skincare
- Preventing breakouts
- Increasing collagen production
Physical exfoliation
Physical exfoliation often require manually scrubbing or rubbing to remove the dead skin cells. This method is common and convenient and often a choice for many, as it is commonly found is in our homes. Some of the commonly used physical exfoliators include;
- Scrubs
- Exfoliating gloves
- Loofahs
- Brushes
- Pumice stone
- Micro-needling rollers
Chemical exfoliation
Chemical exfoliators usually consist of mainly Hydroxy acids and retinol. These chemicals work together with enzymes to help improve the skin’s appearance.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)
Commonly found in fruits such as Sugar cane (Glycolic acid), Pickled vegetables (Lactic acid), and Citrus fruits (Critic acid). These acids peel away the dead cells to allow the renewal of new skin cells. Depending on the type of AHA used it, can benefit the skin in several ways;
- Reduce mild pigmentation
- Minimize pores
- Reduce the appearance of fines lines
- Even out the skin tone
Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs)
Salicylic acid is the most common form of BHA, usually found in acne treatments. This acid removes dead skin cells and excess oil that clog the pores. By removing the excess oil and dead skin cells from the pores, it prevents breakouts from occurring.
Exfoliating is great for the skin if only done regularly with care. Trying to add exfoliation to your skincare be sure to choose the right method depending on your skin type.
